Born in Detroit, he has lived in East St. Louis, Santa Maria, California, Hyattsville, Maryland, and Salt Lake City. He teaches creative writing, the literature of the workplace, writing in the humanities, and book and print history. As of fall 2008 he is editing a collection of poets who lived in Macon, Georgia, where he went to high school and where he now lives with his wife Betsy Lerner.
